Rugby Union the Basics
Essential Knowledge
- Rugby is a full contact sport
- No forward passes
- Two player groups, forwards and backs
- Forwards: typically larger players, first line of defense
- Backs: typically smaller players, faster, playmakers
- Scrum: a rugby play in which the forwards of each side come together in a tight formation and struggle to gain possession of the ball using their feet when it is tossed in among them
- Ruck: A ruck is formed when at least one player from each team is "engaged" in contact over the ball.
- Lineout: Every time the ball goes out of bounds, or a player with the ball goes out of bounds, the team that touches the ball last loses possession. The opposing team then gets to perform a lineout, which is similar to a throw-in in soccer or an inbounds play in basketball.
- A try (point) is scored when the ball is touched to the ground within the try zone
- An attempt at a conversion is awarded when a try is scored
